What is it we expect our students to learn? Essential Learnings and Learning Targets
How will we know when they have learned it? Formative and common assessment, data anaylsis
How will we respond when they don't learn? Intervention, assessments, student goals, students do item analysis of strengths and weaknesses, data analysis
How will we respond when they already know it? Provide extensions of the learning targets - stretch, foreshadow
District secondary math teachers collaborated on an activity that bridged algebra 1 essential learnings to the district algebra 1 curriculum, 9th grade GLEs, and the district algebra 1 first semester common assessment.
Samantha’s original plan
1) Assign groups to the different essential learnings from Algebra 1 (dev on August 12)
2) Deconstruct the essential learnings
3) Ask teachers to look at a couple of learning targets for that particular essential learning (2 or 3 at the most)
4) Write assessments for those learning targets
5) Share out to the whole group
6) Collect them and share with all the math teachers BE

Eielson ?? West Valley – The department is giving homework but not grading the homework. They are giving short concept quizzes daily.
Hutchinson – looking at data, Possibly - SBA’s, Mid-quarters?? § Integrated Algebra – most schools do two years. We will look at data to see how many students go from integrated to algebra, and fail algebra I. § Samantha showed essential learning from Boulder Valley course syllabus(the most popular among the group), and other sources. We will all receive a copy of the examples we looked at from Samantha. § The math curriculum will be up for review in two years. § Samantha will ask other schools about sections of geometry vs geo/trig and see how they are placing students in each class.
Will Algebra 1.5 vs Algebra 2 turn into a problem like geometry and geo/trig? Algebra 1.5 is not NCAA accredited, this could be a problem???

From March 29 email: Everyone, This is a very cool website. I plan to use this for HSGQE and SBA Review this week. It works much the same way that EED formative assessments work. The upgrade from the free BASIC school account includes an analysis toolkit. The software comes out of UK, so the spellings of some words are different, other words are used such as gradient instead of slope, but it appears to be very good. I'll give a training at our PLC this week. It is something everyone can use, appeals to students, provides immediate feedback to the student, accessible 24/7 by the student. Teresa reported we need to collect all our student textbooks and leave them on classroom desks. During break, textbooks will have bars inserted into them for computerized check-out. We will then re-issue textbooks after break.
Ann wrote down Hope's Periods 1 and 4 will receive her non-graphing calculators for the first day of finals and Chuck's will borrow Tanya's non-graphing calculators for his period 4. Hope will give the calc to Teresa for day 2 and Teresa will give the calcs back to Ann for day 3 of finals.
Discussed the need to split the final into two sections before the final.
Discussed the need for two versions of Algebra 1 to be given instead of only one version.
Lenny reported on Math in the Trades is a go for next semester.
Teresa will work on the computer lab schedule for 2nd semester. Was discussed to use GSP one day with Algebra 1.
Teresa asked everyone to bring their Algebra 1 student finals to the next PLC meeting for others to view student work and grading.
Discussed briefly the upcoming 2nd semester revised schedule and what each are doing within their advisory groups.

Discussed what is needed to write SMART goals
Lenny will get the previous passing rate for Algebra 1 students 2008-09 school year.
Teresa will compose SMART goal with Algebra 1 passing rate data by next meeting.
Teresa shared an exit slip formative assessment - students match graphs with equations written in slope intercept form.
Chuck proposed with Erin supporting that another SMART goal be written for increasing the enrollment of higher level math classes.
Teachers, Hope and Anne, shared they are using the practice Algebra 1 semester final problems as warm-ups and/or exit slip assessments.
Agreed to skip 4.5 and 4.6 of Ch4 as there is a need to focus on more algebraic manipulations. Our textbook is slightly out of alignment with the district final common assessment.
Before next meeting, members will add to the wiki or respond to the discussion threads.

Everyone,
This is a very cool website. I plan to use this for HSGQE and SBA Review this week. It works much the same way that EED formative assessments work. The upgrade from the free BASIC school account includes an analysis toolkit. The software comes out of UK, so the spellings of some words are different, other words are used such as gradient instead of slope, but it appears to be very good. I'll give a training at our PLC this week. It is something everyone can use, appeals to students, provides immediate feedback to the student, accessible 24/7 by the student.

Teresa demonstrated adding to the wiki referencing the Algebra I Essential Skills tables that John S. helped insert. The tables will gradually be filled in with textbook page numbers, activities, lessons that address each essential skill.
